Team Spotlight

Scott Shagrin, CFP®
Managing Director, Co-Founder

What do you enjoy most about working with investments?

It’s the aspect of problem-solving complex challenges, requiring analytical and critical thinking, that makes every day exciting and enjoyable. Additionally, every situation is different – whether it’s navigating the complexities of estate planning or devising strategies for retirement – crafting tailored solutions that significantly impact my clients’ financial futures is what I find most rewarding.

What hobbies or interests do you have outside of work?

Many of you know that if I’m not hard at work in the office, you can find me on the golf course at El Caballero, Toscana, or any golf course around the world that I get invited to. So, just let me know the tee time and I’ll be there! Besides sports, I cherish traveling with my wife, Lauren, and making the most of spending quality time with our kids.

What is one piece of advice you would give to someone just starting out in your field?

The key to success in this field is truly listening to your clients. Often, they may be juggling various career, family, and personal interests, so your role is to delve deeper – and almost adopt a therapist’s mindset – to uncover their real questions and concerns to guide them toward solutions that genuinely address their objectives.

How do you stay current and continue to learn in the constantly evolving field of financial planning?

Financial planning is a dynamic and ever-evolving field that requires a commitment to continuous learning to stay ahead. Though my downtime is limited, I prioritize immersing myself in the latest business and financial planning publications to remain on the cutting edge of industry trends and innovations.

How do you approach building and maintaining relationships with clients?

Ultimately, we are in the relationship business; our goal is to forge strong, transparent, and trusting relationships where clients genuinely feel that we have their best interests at heart. I am often surprised to learn that some clients had limited communication with their previous advisors. We take the contrary approach, and jokingly say to new clients that you’ll hear from me more often than you would from your doctor, lawyer, or accountant!

What is something people might be surprised to learn about you?

We live on two golf courses, and while we are not members of those clubs, we play at two courses that are fifteen minutes away from our homes. I guess you could say that we never like to stray far from the course.
