Team Spotlight
Brad Hammerman, CFP®
Financial Planning Associate
What hobbies or interests do you have outside of work?
I am passionate about watching sports – baseball, basketball and especially college football (Go Hoosiers!). I love to run – both outdoors and on the treadmill – and need to break a sweat daily. My wife and I are avid hikers. On most Saturdays you’ll find us on a hike followed by a great meal.
What is one piece of advice you would give to someone just starting out in your field?
Work under a great mentor or team where you can learn from more experienced planners/advisors. You need to prioritize your clients’ needs and goals before anything else. Truly listen and understand where they are coming from and where they want to go. Long term success comes from building trust. Additionally, you never want to stop learning or educating yourself as the field is constantly changing.
What are some important skills or traits that you believe are essential for success in your role?
I have an MBA, as well as my CPA and CFP designations, which allow me to think about and explain topics in a multi-faceted way. I have a deep understanding of portfolio management, tax planning and market trends. I am a strategic thinker who can focus on both present and future goals.
How do you approach building and maintaining relationships with clients?
My approach is twofold – listening and clear communication. I strive to always be transparent and proactive in my approach. No two clients are the same, so I am always using my knowledge to create personalized plans. Regular check-ins and timely updates are a must, even when the market is doing well.
How do you stay current and continue to learn in the constantly evolving field of financial planning?
I read articles and attend webinars led by industry experts. I also attend a variety of networking events throughout the year. Surrounding myself with other financial professionals is a great way to share knowledge (both good and bad) and stay current with trends, changes, and insight.
What is something people might be surprised to learn about you?
I met my wife the first week of college and we are celebrating 20 years of marriage this year. I am an Uncle of 4 and my twin nieces call me Uncle Yes because I never say no to them. They always get extra gifts and dessert when I’m around! I’ve been a Pescatarian for 10+ years and don’t miss eating meat at all. I love Major League Baseball and have seen both a No Hitter and a Perfect Game from the same pitcher live.
