Stenosis/Spinal Stenosis

What it is :
In understanding stenosis, it is helpful to understand what happens to our spines as we get older. As we age, ligaments in the spine can begin to thicken and harden. Bones and joints can enlarge, while bone growths can develop on the vertebrae. This causes the spinal canal to narrow, placing pressure on the spinal cord and creating a condition called stenosis. This condition may also be referred to as “spinal stenosis.”

Stenosis/spinal stenosis often goes hand-in-hand with spondylosis.

Where it occurs:
Stenosis/spinal stenosis can appear in the:

Neck (cervical spine)
Low back (lumbar spine)
Middle and upper back (thoracic spine)

When stenosis affects the neck, it is called “cervical stenosis.” When stenosis appears in the low back, it is referred to a “lumbar stenosis.”

The symptoms:
Patients with stenosis/spinal stenosis may experience symptoms including:

Pain
Numbness
Tingling
Weakness
Stiffness
