Instability

What it is:
Instability is a condition that is caused by the progression of other conditions, such as disc degeneration. For example, when discs in the spine degenerate, the vertebrae begin to move in ways they shouldn’t. Ligaments begin to stretch and tear. This causes excessive movement in the spine, resulting in a condition called instability. Instability can result in pinched nerves and speed up the progression of arthritis.

Where it occurs:
Instability most commonly affects the:

Neck (cervical spine)
Low back (lumbar spine)
Middle and upper back (thoracic spine)
Shoulder, hip, and knee

Although these are the most common areas affected by instability, the condition can occur in nearly every major joint in the body.

The symptoms:
Patients with instability may experience symptoms including:

Swelling
Pressure
Pain
Sharp, stabbing sensations
