Instability

What it is:
When discs in the spine degenerate, the vertebrae begin to move in ways they shouldn’t. Ligaments begin to stretch and tear. This causes excessive movement in the spine. This condition is called instability, and can result in pinched nerves and speed up the progression of arthritis.

Where it occurs:
Instability most commonly affects the:

Neck (cervical spine)
Low back (lumbar spine)
Middle and upper back (thoracic spine)
Shoulder, hip, and knee
Can affect nearly every major joint in the body

The Symptoms:
Patients with instability may experience:

Swelling
Pressure
Pain
Sharp, stabbing sensations
