1- Active Neck Muscle Training in the Treatment of Chronic Neck Pain in Women pdf document

By Jari Ylinen, MD, Esa-Pekka Takala, MD, Matti Nykanen, MD, Arja Hakkinen, PhD, Esko Malkia, PhD, Timo Pohjolainen, MD, Sirkka-Liisa Karppi, MSc, Hannu Kautiainen, BA, Olavi Airaksinen, MD

Study highlights:
1- This study was designed to evaluate the effectiveness of neck strength and endurance training in women with chronic neck pain.
2- Patients were separated into either strength training, endurance training or aerobic/stretching groups.
3- After one year, the strength training and endurance training groups had improvement in disability, pain and range of motion. For example, 73 percent of the strength training group and 59 percent of the endurance training group had considerable or complete pain relief.
4- The aerobic and stretching group showed considerably less improvement.

2- Evidence for Excercise Therapy in Mechanical Neck Disorders pdf document

By H. Sarig-Bahat

Study highlights:
1- This study was to determine what exercise programs are effective in treating patients with mechanical neck disorders.
2- Proprioceptive (balance related) exercises and dynamic-resisted strengthening exercises (exercises with weights) for the neck and shoulders were found to be effective.
3- Getting patients to exercise soon after being injured was also found to be helpful for whiplash patients.

5- Neck Muscle Endurance, Self-Report, and Range of Motion Data From Subjects With Treated and Untreated Neck Pain

By H. Lee

Study highlights:
1- This study was designed to describe characteristics of different levels of neck pain – pain that required treatment, pain that didn’t require treatment, and no pain.
2- Study participants were measured for neck muscle endurance, neck range of motion, posture, neck length and head circumference. They also completed questionnaires about their neck pain.
3- Researchers found differences in neck muscle endurance, range of motion, and questionnaire answers between each group, which may help distinguish between them.

7- A Randomized Controlled Trial on the Efficacy of Exercise for Patients With Chronic Neck Pain

By Thomas T.W. Chiu, PhD, Tai-Hing Lam, MD, Anthony J. Hedley, MD

Study highlights:
1- This study evaluated the effectiveness of neck exercise programs for patients with chronic neck pain.
2- Patients were separated into exercise and non-exercise groups.
3- After the six-week study, patients in the exercise group had significant improvement in disability, pain and neck strength.

8- Unravelling the Complexity of Muscle Impairment in Chronic Neck Pain.

By D. Falla

Study highlights:
1- Research has shown exercise is important in treating patients with neck pain.
2- However, it is not clear what type of exercise and how much exercise is effective.
3- This study found patients with chronic neck pain have complex muscle impairments.
4- Understanding these impairments is important in recommending an appropriate and effective rehabilitation program.

10- The Hanoun Multi-Cervical Unit

By Robert De Mardis, B App Sc, Jenny Keating, PhD

Article highlights:
1- Many recent studies have found that strengthening programs are helping increase strength and reduce pain of patients with neck pain.
2- However, prescribing exercise is imprecise, as patients may do exercises incorrectly. This could mean the patient receives no benefit – or could even make the condition worse.
3- The Melbourne Whiplash Center (MWC) was immediately interested in the Hanoun Multi-Cervical Unit (MCU) because the MCU can assess strength and range of motion of the neck. It can then be used to monitor neck strength training exercises.
4- MWC developed a set of guidelines for the use of the MCU, called the Melbourne Protocol.
5- In one MCU study, researchers found that patients’ strength and range of motion improved significantly after treatment.
6- Clinics that offer MCU therapy share patient results with MWC. The data shows patient strength gains average 105 percent, and 74 percent of patients respond positively to the therapy.
