5- Chiropractic Spinal Manipulative Therapy vs. Amitriptyline for the Treatment of Chronic Tension-type Headaches: A Randomized Comparative Clinical Trial

By Dr. Patrick Boline

Study highlights:
1- Study participants were randomly divided into two groups. Over a six-week period, one group received chiropractic manipulations and the other a medication called amitriptyline.
2- Patients who received spinal manipulations had fewer side effects and longer-lasting relief.
3- Four weeks after treatment was completed, the group that received chiropractic care experienced a:

  • 32 percent reduction in headache intensity
  • 42 percent reduction in headache frequency
  • 30 percent reduction in over-the-counter medication usage
  • 16 percent improvement in functional health status

4- Meanwhile, the group that received amitriptyline reverted back to their original headache levels.
5- 82.1 of the group receiving amitriptyline reported side effects, compared to only 4.3 percent of the group receiving chiropractic care.
6- This was one of the first studies to provide evidence that chiropractic care is an effective treatment for tension headaches.

By Douglas McCrory, Donald Penzien, Rebecca Gray

Study highlights:
1- The research included a literature review of several headache treatment options by a panel of 25 multi-disciplinary experts.
2- They found that spinal manipulation resulted in almost immediate improvement of cerviocogenic headaches (headaches that originate in the neck).
3- Compared to medication, spinal manipulation offers fewer side effects and longer-lasting relief from tension-type headaches.
4- 20 to 30 percent of adults have more than one tension-type headache a month.
