1- Pain Management: A Practical Guide for Clinicians

Better Health

2- MTG Newsletter Special Report- The DRS SYSTEM

Article highlights:
1- Up to 80 percent of the population will experience low back pain at some point.
2- There are many different causes of low back pain, including degenerating discs, spondylosis, facet arthropy, stenosis, bulging or herniated discs, and instability.
3- There are also many different treatments, many of which are painful, expensive and ineffective. Some treatments, like surgery, can cause even further disability.
4- A new treatment option, decompression therapy, has been the subject of several recent studies. One study found that, on average, 71 percent of decompression patients saw improved pain, activity and mobility levels.
5- One noteworthy decompression device is the DRS System.
6- Several studies have found there is a high success rate with DRS treatment.
7- The DRS System is non-invasive and cost effective. For example, the cost per patient is usually in the range of $2,500 to $5,000, compared to surgical procedures costing more than $30,000.

3- DECOMPRESSION, REDUCTION, AND STABILIZATION OF THE LUMBAR SPINE: A Cost-Effective Treatment For Lumbosacral Pain

By C. Norman Shealy, MD, PhD, Vera Borgmeyer, RN, MA

Study highlights:
1- Low back pain is the most common pain complaint.
2- It is the most common cause of disability in people under the age of 45.
3- Back pain is also a very costly problem.
4- Up until recently, treatments have been expensive, invasive and mostly ineffective.
5- The authors developed the DRS System to offer low back pain relief through decompression, reduction and stabilization.
6- In their study, they compared the pain relief offered by the DRS System to traditional mechanical traction.
7- Up to 86 percent of the DRS patients experienced “good” to “excellent” pain relief. Meanwhile, only up to 50 percent of the traction patients had “good” to “excellent” relief.
8- The DRS System is estimated to cost 80 percent less than standard treatments.

4- JOURNAL OF NEUROIMAGING JUNE 1998
Simple pelvic traction gives inconsistent relief to herniated lumbar disc sufferers.

By Edward L. Eyerman, MD

Study highlights:
1- Dr. Eyerman’s study looked for evidence of patients’ improvement after receiving DRS treatment by comparing MRIs taken before and after treatment.
2- He found that:

  • DRS treatments provided “good” to “excellent” pain relief.
  • There was up to 90 percent reduction in the size of patients’ disc herniations.
  • Improvement of patients’ radiculopathy and healing of herniated discs was also seen.
